January 30-February 5, 1972
• The Frankton Jaycees presented Distinguished Service Awards at the sixth annual event. Receiving awards were Kent Bott, Outstanding Young Farmer; Brenda Cummings, Outstanding Young Educator; Bob Dailey, Frankton Jaycee President; and Larry Fox, Distinguished Service Award.
• Coach Rod Hicks reserve basketball club continues to show improvement with each passing game by scoring a big 55-47 win over the Taylor Titans. Randy Robison had 15 points and Paul Fuller and Andy Durm each had 10 points.
• Fifth grade teacher at Oakland, Joe Wood, traveled 25,000 miles completely encompassing the globe during the holiday break. Wood visited his brother, Dr. Leonard Wood and his wife in Bangkok, Thailand.
• John’s Supper Club advertised a noon luncheon special for every Wednesday, of a T-bone for $1.75.
• Five members of the Elwood wrestling team received honors in the Central Indiana Conference tourney at Blackford County. They were: Sam Heiser, first at 87 pounds; Jeff Dillen, first, 145; Marty Robison, third, 105; Bruce Etchison, second, 138; and Rusty Loy, second, heavyweight.
• Officers for 1972 of the Elwood Council No. 93 R.&S.M. were installed at the Masonic Temple. They were: William Davies, recorder; Charles Miller, deputy master; Kenneth Arnold, illustrious master; Robert Stockdale, principal conductor; Lester Sigler, installing officer; Carl Tatum Jr., installing officer; Curtis Sullivan, captain guard; George Stout, stewart; Doit Culp, conductor of council; Lester Hackett, treasurer; and Opal Doan, sentinel.
• John Mengelt appears to be adjusting to professional basketball if his play against the New York Knicks is any indication. He was named outstanding player of the game and scored 12 points for the Royals.
• Eileen Jarvis was named lady bowler of the week. Bob Savage and Don Powell gained co-bowlers of the week honors in the men’s division.
• Thirteen past exalted rulers of the Elks Lodge were honored. They were William Downey, 1947-48; William Blake, 1945-46; John Rutledge, 1951-52; Lloyd Richwine, 1957-58; John E. Held, 1950-51; William Whitenack, 1969-70; John Burnette, 1965-66; H.R. Weatherford, 1970-71; Irvin Goins, 1967-68; Weldon Shickley 1960-61; Robert E. Hanlin, 1968-69; Phillip Powell, 1956-57 and Robert L. DeHority, 1937-38.
Forty Years Ago
January 30-February 5, 1982
• Four identical quadruplet lambs were born to a crossbred ewe on the Michael Hussey farm located seven miles north of Elwood on State Road 37.
• Saturday, Jan. 30 will be a Late Skate with 50s music at the Fun Spot Roller Rink located at North J and 19th streets.
• The Elwood National Guard armory became a haven for 14 stranded motorists due to the snow and sleet in the area. Eighteen inches of snow and high winds contributed to the problem.
• Kevin Bogard of Elwood High School and Lisa Callahan of Frankton High School were selected Teens of the Month by the Elwood Elks Lodge.
• Pat Nash, Bill Hartsock and Bob Martin were named bowlers of the week.
• Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter weather.
• Downtown Elwood resembled a scene from Dr. Zhivago during the heighth of the latest snowstorm to paralyze the area.
• Sam W. Bixby was driving a 1973 Pontiac Grand Prix when it became stuck in the snow on the railroad tracks at South C and Anderson streets. A pasenger Jim McPhearson attempted to help Bixby free the car when it was hit by a train. Both escaped injuiry.
• Elwood wrestlers going to regional competition include: Don Lee, 185 pounds; Eric Stewart, 155; Lonny Scholl, 138; and Art Harris, heavyweight.
Thirty Years Ago
January 30-February 5, 1992
• Sharing the spotlight before the Elwood-Alexandria girls basketball game were the Lady Panthers four seniors, Carrie Hoppel, Amy Green, Angie Murray and Jennifer Baxter.
• Linda Baker, an Elwood special education teacher and president of the Elwood Kiwanis Club, attended a leadership conference in Washington D.C.
• Navy Seaman Dutch Parish deployed to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Normandy. Parish will be deployed for six months.
• Elwood High School’s three senior swimmers celebrated senior night in style contributing to nine victories as the Panthers downed Westfield 121-49. Swimmers honored were David Retherford, Brandon Wheeler and Thad Hoffman. Managers honored were Anna Barnett and Erika Gatewood.
• Ron and Kelli Boyland became parents of a son born at Mercy Hospital, named Tanner Joseph Patrick Boyland.
• Panther wrestlers who qualified for regionals were Robbie Leavitt, 103; Mike Robison, 119; Dennis Gerencser, 130; Jack Reese, 140; Scott Morris, 160; and Chad Hibst, 171.
• Indiana Michigan purchased the former Indiana Gas Company facility on Ind. 28.
• Construction on the new YMCA building is set to begin in the next few months.
• Twins Floe Moody and Florence Orbaugh will soon celebrate their 90th birthdays.
• A new automotive repair shop opened at 1826 North E Street and is owned by Steve Courtney.
