Twila Ruth Simmons

Twila Ruth Simmons, 72, of Elwood, passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at her residence following a very brief illness.
She was born in Anderson on April 28, 1949, the daughter of the late Evelyn Lawrence .
On Oct. 17, 1970 she married Michael Simmons and they shared more than 51 years of marriage together.
Twila retired on April 30, 2021 from St. Vincent Mercy Hospital where she had worked as cook for more than 34 years.
Twila had previously worked at Nick’s Pizza in Anderson, Elwood Dairy Queen and Dickey’s Nursing Home.
She enjoyed cooking and baking. Twila’s family said that she was the best cook ever. She made the best chicken and noodles, Robert Redford dessert and was known for her breads and desserts. Twila enjoyed doing crafts, attending concerts in the park, and spending time at the lake. More than anything Twila loved spending time with her family.
Twila is survived by husband, Michael Simmons of Elwood; children, James (wife Toni) Simmons and Melissa Vandiver; grandchildren, Benjamin (wife Jessica) Vandiver, Gabrielle Sim-mons, Layni Simmons, Blake (husband Daniel) Cortes’-Michael; great-grandchildren, who called her Gigi, Justice Vandiver and Brighton Vandiver; sister, Mona (husband Donnie) Phillips; and several nieces and nephews.
Twila was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn Lawrence; sister Mary Payne; and many aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at Dunnichay Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Gary Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at Dunnichay Funeral Home.
