Panthers vs. Panthers for CIC baseball title
ALEXANDRIA -- Elwood and Eastbrook did their parts Tuesday to set up
Thursday’s Central Indiana Conference baseball showdown.
Elwood’s Panthers and Eastbrook’s Panthers will meet for the conference
championship at 5 p.m. on the EHS diamond.
“It should be a great matchup, and I hope our fans will come out to see it,”
Elwood Coach Adrian Heim said. “I know the boys are excited.”
Elwood improved to 15-4 overall and 5-1 in the CIC with Tuesday’s
come-from-behind, 13-5 victory over Alexandria.
Meanwhile at Eastbrook, senior Jason Hooten pitched a no-hitter in beating Oak
Hill 8-2. Hooten struck out 13 batters, and Oak Hill’s runs were unearned.
That improved Eastbrook’s record to 17-2 overall and 5-1 in the CIC.
Eastbrook is ranked No.10 in Class 3A.
Elwood is ranked No.12 in Class 2A.
Both teams used the longball to win Tuesday.
Eastbrook’s Dillon Farr had a three-run home run and Nate Felver added a two-run
homer.
Meanwhile for Elwood, Nate Wills went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs with a
three-run home in the fifth inning and a two-run double in the sixth.
Also for Elwood, Cody Summers and Zach Taylor went 2-for-3, with Summers driving
in three runs, and Darren Jones had a double.
However, eight of Elwood’s 10 hits came in the last three innings. Alex’s
Overman limited the Panthers to a pair of hits -- both by Wills -- through four
innings.
The Tigers used a three-run third inning to build a 4-2 edge. Garrett Hosier’s
two-run homer was the big blast.
Overman also retired the first two Panthers in the fifth before Elwood erupted.
“I don’t know what woke us up, but we’ll take it,” said Heim.
Darren Jones doubled and Alexandria intentionally walked Troy Worsley. Wills
made the Tigers pay when he slugged a three-run homer to put Elwood ahead 5-4.
And the Panthers weren’t done.
Jacob Hartman drew a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Nathaniel Jones.
On a hit-and-run play that pulled the Alex shortstop toward second base, Summers
drove the ball through the left side and Jones scored all the way from first
base on the single.
That made it 6-4.
Summers ended up on third as the throw went to the plate. He scored on Taylor’s
single for a 7-4 edge.
Elwood tacked on six more runs in the sixth.
Jacob Hartman pitched the first four ininings. Darren Jones worked the fifth and
sixth and Wills pitched the seventh.
For Alex, Hosier had the home run and a double and Corey Smith also was 2-for-3.
The Tigers play today at Class 3A No.4-ranked Yorktown.
Elwood’s home game today against Mt. Vernon was cancelled this morning because
of a rain-drenched diamond. The junior varsity game at Fortville also has been
cancelled.

to the Argylls’ four.
Each team scored three times in the first inning. M-G then added two in the

8 Lady Eagles earn berths in track regional
By ED HAMILTON
Call-Leader Sports Editor
PENDLETON -- Small stood tall Tuesday night in the girls track and field
sectional at Pendleton Heights High School.
Frankton, with the second-smallest contingent among the 12 teams competing,
placed fourth behind Pendleton Heights, Mt. Vernon and Anderson Highland.
And not even those big schools could boast the percentage of athletes Frankton
will send to next Tuesday’s regional at Indianapolis Ben Davis.
Eight of the 12 Lady Eagles will make that trip along with Coach Jennifer
Fields.
“I was very happy with where we finished,” said Fields. “I think we hold our own
when we go up against the big schools.
“I mean, we take 12 people into the meet and we’re right after Pendleton Heights
(25 athletse), Mt. Vernon (16) and Highland (22). That says a lot for these
girls and what they’re able to accomplish.”
Pendleton Heights repeated as team champion with 149 points. Mt. Vernon scored
83½, Highland 63 and Frankton 59½.
Frankton produced two sectional-winning efforts.
As they did in last Friday’s Central Indiana Conference meet, the Lady Eagles
opened the sectional by winning the 4-by-800 relay.
Seniors Mary Kelich, Candace DeLong, Heather Herrmann and Danielle Jeske won
with a time of 10:19.22, 12 seconds shy of the FHS and CIC record they set on
Friday.
DeLong then repeated as sectional champion in the 300-meter hurdles and was
second in the 100-meter hurdles to PH’s Katie Kritzer.
DeLong also anchored the 4-by-400 relay, which finished fourth to take the final
regional spot. Ahead of her with the baton were freshman Brandi Sizelove, junior
Krista Revolinsk and Jeske.
Also advancing as an individual was Herrmann, who placed second in the 3,200 to
Alexandria senior Bri Foster.
Foster also won the 1,600, but Herrmann was fifth to miss a regional trip.
After the sectional ended and coaches scratched some athletes from regional
events, Fields found out that two more Lady Eagles will be regional-bound.
Junior Stephanie Julian, who tied for fifth in the high jump, will get to
compete for a third year at regional.
Also, sophomore Amanda Barcus, sixth in the 100, was given a regional spot when
two sprinters ahead of her were scratched.
“Stephanie had a tough night in the high jump, but we did great in the 4-by-800
again, so it balances out, I guess,” said Fields.
“And the 4-by-400, fourth is pretty much where I figured we might be, and I’m
glad they’re going to get a chance to go run at regional. That will be the first
time for that group.
“And Heather missed (advanding in the 1,600), but I think we were focusing more
on the (3,200).
“And Candace, she’s the 300 hurdles champion, and she was so close in that (100
hurdles).”
Kritzer edged DeLong for that title by six-100ths of a second.
“That’s so close,” said Fields, “but I’m happy she’s going in both of those
events again. I think she’s done that every year she’s been here. It just
wouldn’t be the same without her at regionals.”
Frankton scored in 10 of the 16 events to finish fourth for the second straight
season.
Other points came from Jeske, sixth in the 800, freshman Allie Browning, fifth
in the 3,200, and senior Katie Belesky, eighth in the shot put.
Alexandria’s Foster will be competing at regional in three events. She swept the
1,600 and 3,200 after helping the Lady Tigers’ 4-by-800 relay to a fourth-place
finish.
Placing third in the long jump was Katie Muey.
Elwood’s only point came from Marisol Salinas, eighth in the 100-meter hurdles.
DeLong’s victory in the 300-meter hurdles was one of nine repeat victories in 16
events.
Anderson sprinter Jasmine McGhee repeated in both the 100 and 200, Foster in the
1,600, Kritzer in the 100 hurdles, Mt. Vernon in the 4-by-400 relay, Wes-Del’s
Kelsey Jackson in the high jump, Pendleton Heights Ellie McCardwell in the pole
vault (she set a sectional record by clearing 12 feet 2 inches), Highland’s
Donielle Burton in the long jump and Highland’s Kierra Allen in the discus.

Ole Miss shuts out L. Panthers
GAS CITY --- Closer was some consolation. A little, at least.
Elwood High School’s softball team, whipped by Mississinewa 13-2 on April 19 at
the Manchester Invitational, dropped a 6-0 decision to Ole Miss on Tuesday.
Class 3A No.8-ranked Mississinewa, which was 7-0 when it beat Elwood the first
time, improved its record to 16-3 overall and to 4-2 in the Central Indiana
Conference.
The Lady Indians are scheduled to host Class 2A No.10 Madison-Grant this
afternoon.
Elwood slipped to 7-12 overall and finished 1-6 in the CIC.
“We played them a much better game than at Manchester,” Elwood Coach Kirkwood
said.
Pitchers Ashley Lowe and Ashlea Nash, who combined on a 10-strikeout one-hitter
last time, limited Elwood to a pair of hits while striking out 15 Tuesday.
Lowe, who got credit for the win, allowed no hits through four innings, striking
out 10 and walking one.
Nash allowed two hits in three innings, striking out five.
With Elwood’s only hits was Kayla Rider, who singled in the fifth and seventh
innings.
The only Lady Panther to advance past first base was Brittney McPhearson. She
walked to open the game, was bunted ahead by Jamie Coston and took third on a
passed ball. But Lowe got two strikeouts to strand her there and retired the
final 12 batters she faced.
Rider greeted Nash with a leadoff single in the fifth, but the freshman
fireballer retired eight straight before Rider singled again with two outs in
the seventh.
For Ole Miss, Jennifer McCoin had three RBIs, including a two-run home run in
the fifth inning.
Carley Croy pitched a complete game for Elwood, giving up eight hits while
striking out two and walking five.
Elwood will entertain Delta on Thursday for a varsity-junior varsity
double-header.
The Lady Panthers will play host to Class 2A No.2 Eastern on Friday, to
celebrate Senior Night, then will play in Saturday’s Mt. Vernon Tournament.
