Elwood’s netters celebrate victory
The drought is over ... and not even a brief rain shower could prevent the end.
Elwood High School’s boys tennis team won a meet for the first time since 2008 by blanking arch rival Tipton 5-0 on Wednesday.
Coach Max Hoppel’s Panthers had dropped their first seven meets this season after an 0-20 campaign a year ago under Coach Joe Veger.
“The kids were really happy,” said Hoppel. “We were more experienced than Tipton, but their players did not give up.”
Tipton is 0-3 after earlier losses to Taylor and Western.
“Our team is very happy to get a win, but we did not stroke the ball as well as we did against Anderson (in Tuesday’s 5-0 loss),” said Hoppel. “That was mainly due to lack of pace on the ball (coming back from Tipton players.)”
In singles matches, junior Nick Wiand beat Garrett Clabough 6-4, 6-2; junior Justin Wiand outlasted sophomore Quentin Boughton 6-2, 6-4; and senior Kyle Kaszuba handled senior Cameron Tragesser 6-1, 6-3.
Tipton had only six of its seven players eligible, so it forfeited the No.1 doubles match to senior Rob Baker and sophomore Dakin Updegraff.
At No.2 doubles, sophomore Brock Fettig and junior Drake Mengelt recovered from a first-set loss to beat freshmen Blake Good and Ethan Phifer 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-4.
In a junior varsity match, Elwood sophomore Zane Summers beat Andrew Plake 8-7 (7-5).
Next week, Elwood plays at Muncie Burris on Tuesday, travels to Blackford on Thursday and plays host to the Elwood Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 11. Also in that tournament will be Knightstown, Alexandria and University High School.
INDIANS 6-1: Anderson, which has beaten Elwood twice in the past week, improved to 6-1 Wednesday with a 5-0 victory over Mt. Vernon. The Indians play host to Muncie Burris today.
